Happy Birthday to ME!

Yes, Happy Birthday to ME!
and it was a very very good day too!

Sunday was indeed my Birthday, and I wasn't going to make a big deal about it.
I wasn't.
I asked (begged) Deanna not to throw a party, and she didn't!
well, sort of.
but I'm getting ahead of myself.

First let me make this clear: Deanna always makes sure that my birthday is special. Whether I want her to or not. (Here's a secret: I really do, and she knows that but I complain loudly that I don't)

I really am not big on big parties that focus on me. (no kidding this time)
So my Sunday went like this:
It's Sunday right? So I have to get up and get ready for Church.
Yes, I could have "skipped" but keep in mind that I only get to go to church once every other week. I didn't want to miss it.

Still, I did sleep in a little longer and get ready a little later. I just kind of "puttered along". Deanna made me one of my favorite breakfasts:
Sawmill gravy (sausage gravy) and fresh bisquits.
A little later, and later than we should have, we went to church.
Wonderful service at church. The Lords Spirit was amongst the fellowship before during and after. It was very nice and filling if you know what I mean.
After Church we came home and I took a nap. Naps ARE Good!
I woke up for a while and then Napped some more!
Did I mention that Naps ARE Good!?
The weather was fantastic and I was glad that our friend Luke was here.
I was sitting on our back patio enjoying the sunshine and the breeze while playing my guitar (badly as usual). The kids were playing in the yard, Amanda, Peggy, Deanna, Luke and myself just sort of lounged around. Amanda and Deanna didn't lounge quite so much as they were cooking on the grill outside and preparing for the "feast" inside.
Anyway, I mentioned to the group that it's such a beautiful day I almost feel bad for sitting here doing nothing.
Luke piped up with:
You are doing something! You are enjoying this day!
Then he clarified:
It is Such a beautiful day that it would be a shame to be distracted from it by doing something.
I really like Luke.
He can visit any time he wants and stay as long as he wants.
I did say it was a very Good Day right. So I listened to Lukes wisdom and enjoyed it. God is Very Good.
WEe had a fantastic Lunch that we nibbled on til some time after dinner and into the evening. Pausing to go back out and enjoy the day and the fellowship of family and friends.
In true awards style I would like to thank:
God. Duh. He is So Good to us very unworthy souls
Mom and Dad. Again Duh. Even though they weren't here it wouldn't be a Birthday without them.
The rest of my family and Friends because birthdays spent alone really, really "Inhale"
Especially: Deanna. From Morning until evening she did everything possible to make this day special for me. She respected what I wanted and knew what I needed. Smartest thing I ever did was accepting this gift from God that is my wife.
Okay, 'Nuff Said. I'm late for work so I don't have time to proof read this. Be kind.
Will.

Our cat is waiting for my Mom and Dad to come back.
The fact that their "porch" is right in the Sunshine
has nothing to do with it...

Entering the Mississippi Lock

The river, surgery, tag, extention, spills and clean up

I bet you are all wondering what that title is all about right now. It seems to be the story of our lives lately. Here goes....
First there is the Mississippi River, which is the subject that Jessalyn chose for her Wisconsin Heritage Fair project. We are very proud of her. She had to chose a subject that she thought had some effect on Wisconsin's Heritage. They gave her many ideas in a packet, but she chose the river. She came up with some very, very good reasons for her thinking and has done a great report. Monday, we drove over as a family and went to the river on both the Wisconsin side and the Minnesota side. The picture above is in Minnesota on the opposite side of the river from LaCrosse WI, right next to the lock and dam. Quite interesting and we got some great pix of a tug boat going through the lock. She has to make her presentation today.
Tuesday Jessa went to the Doctor. She had been showing the same symptoms of Lyme's disease again and had this weird rash on the back of one knee. We had to do the blood tests and then while he was there the Dr. took a biopsy of these skin tag/bump things that she keeps getting on her legs. They just keep appearing. We sent one off to pathology to figure out how to get rid of them. Now she has 2 stitches in the back of her leg right where it rubs on the chair when she sits down. I'm taking her, her Wisconsin Heritage project and her stool to prop her leg on to school today. That should prove interesting. We got the blood work back, no problems! Praise God. I really was not looking forward to dealing with Lymes again.
My tag from Will proves not so interesting.
Famous things that happened on August 20th (really great whoopie do here).

1) 636 - Battle of Yarmuk: (I just liked the name not the subject)
2) 1866 - President Andrew Johnson formally declared the U.S. Civil War over.

Two people who were born on my birthday (not the same year):

1) 1923 - Jim Reeves, American singer (d. 1964)
2) 1926 - Nobby Wirkowski, American and Canadian football player and
coach ( I liked his name)

Two people who died on my birthday:

1) 535 - Mochta of Louth, disciple of St. Patrick (name thing again, think you
could say that 3 times fast?)
2) 1912 - William Booth, English founder of the Salvation Army (b. 1829)

Holiday?
Whew! that's over. Everyone else had interesting people and things.. Mine were pretty boring.

My mail route has been extended and it starts on Saturday. It adds about 6 hours a week. I'm looking forward to mail count. Maybe they will make me a full time route. I still should be done by 1:00 every day. Not too shabby, even though I would rather be lots of other places.

The state has come up with this new law that all counties have to have an emergency plan for evacuation during a chemical spill or natural disaster. They have been working on the local one for awhile. Now they realize that they need a different plan for the crowd during Cranfest. They contacted us to have meetings with them to decide on a course of action. Oh sure, let's just figure out a way to get 30-40 thousand people out of town on 4 roads in less than an hour. GREAT FUN! We decided to do more research and then get back together and talk. It tends to be overwhelming if you don't take it in smaller steps and not try to run the marathon right away. We kind of decided that the main problem is not getting them out of town, but back to their cars. People tend to get lost and forget where their cars are parked when they are calm, add in the stress of evacuation and you have disaster. Great way to spend the afternoon.

It's spring clean up time at the Donaldson house right now. We had a work day last week that was a great, great help to me. All of us went out and worked, including Luke who does not sleep here, but practically lives here during the winter. Everyone worked together and raked and cleaned. It would have taken me hours and hours to get the work done, but it only took about 2 hours to get a really good start on everything. Then we cooked burgers, Italian sausages and hot dogs on the grill. It was great fun and it was so very nice to have that much done. Now I have to get down to working on the courtyards. Amanda is going to help me. We are planting flower beds and laying down some pathways etc. Then there are my hummingbirds, so the feeders will need to be filled for their arrival. My tulips are starting to bloom and my dwarf iris's have already bloomed and are almost done. Last year my iris count was about 20 and this year it was over 50. I'm glad because the iris is my favorite flower. The way they are growing I might have over 100 next year. WOW!

We have been planning the garden for our new crop of weeds. The kids are really excited about it. Of course that will only stick around until the hard work starts in. Oh well, maybe they will work with me this year. Much to their disappointment I bought Kale seeds. I LOVE KALE in my soups and they both hate it. I'm really looking forward to fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. I could eat all summer on tomatoes, cukes, summer squash and green peppers. Throw in a little onion and I'm happy.
I'm looking for a recipe for a "sweet" chili sauce. Claire has been looking around some to buy, but I don't know if she's had any luck. I thought it would be nice to try to can some for this next winter. I know I'm making apple butter this year if possible. I miss it. I guess I'm going to have to make all the jellies and jams again. I just have to find the time to do it. That's my life for you.

Well, time to kennel dogs, shower, transport kids and deliver mail. My to do list only has about 10 things on it for this afternoon. Pretty light. Maybe I can get everything done. Have a great day!

One Good Tag Deserves Another; or Turnabout Is Fair Play!

Okay, I got tagged again. This one is really interesting though, here are the rules:

Wikipedia

The rules are:
1) Go to Wikipedia
2) In the search box, type your birth month and day but not the year.
3) List three events that happened on your birthday
4) List two important birthdays
5) List two deaths
6) One holiday or observance (if any)
7) Tag 5 other bloggers to complete

So: April 29th:

Events

1770 - James Cook arrives at and names Botany Bay, Australia.

1910 - Andrew Fisher becomes Prime Minister of Australia for the second time.

Bonus:
2005 - Syria completes withdrawal from Lebanon, ending 29 years of occupation.

Births:

Deaths

1698 - Charles Cornwallis, 3rd Baron Cornwallis, First Lord of the British Admiralty (b. 1655
1980 - Alfred Hitchcock, English film director (b. 1899)

Holidays and observances:

Now, the hard part,
(besides picking only a few birthdays...there is SO many!);
I'm supposed to pick 5 people to tag.
I don't have 5 people to tag that I didn't tag for the last one.
I do have Nomes to thank for this one (see her blog) so she's off the hook.

Instead I think I'll just ask every one who reads this to just find one example of a birth, death, event or holiday that happens on their birthday and leave it on my "commentator" on the right! Okie Doakie??
Okie Doakie!!

Deanna's 4's

Will tagged me on this one and I suppose I should answer the challenge. Of course I waited until tonight when I am so tired, I cannot think straight. The neighbor just came over to talk to Will and they are outside discussing things. Will and I had been in the middle of a tv show and the twerp took the remote with him AFTER PAUSING THE SHOW! Without the remote there is no changing anything on the tv (tivo type thingy) so here I sit. I would go to bed, but truthfully I'm nosy about what the neighbor said.
Here we go with the questions....
1. Four places that I have lived: It might be easier to tell you where I have not lived, but here are 4 of them, Rome Georgia, Rockford Illinois, Crawfordville Florida and Warrens Wisconsin.

2. Four tv shows I like to watch: Criminal Minds, $40 a Day, All the CSI's and Numbers. Those are the current ones, but I also just love Old Reruns of I Love Lucy, MASH and Mayberry.

3. Four places I have been on vacation: Disney World (one of my favorites, I almost went to work there singing, but decided that Will was my better choice).

A trip to Canada and the East Coast. We went up and over through Canada and then came down the East Coast and over through Pennsylvania.

Washington DC was a great place for me although I would love to go back now that I'm older and explore more.

Since my Dad is a Civil War buff, I think that I have been to almost every Civil War Battlefield there is.....walking onto Gettysburg was one of the most profound moments of my life. Another one of those speechless, breathtaking moments for me was walking through Lincoln's tomb in Springfield Illinois, it just felt like the past was still there and in the quietness of that place you could "feel" history. I don't know how to explain it, but those two places have the same feeling for me. History is my thing and those two places are very moving for me.

4. Four of my favorite foods. This one is really hard for me. I love food, I love the texture, the flavors the experience of food. I think that is why I love to cook so much. It would be easier to tell you the things I have found that I do not like.....liver and onions, escargo (a texture thing), sardines (texture again) As far as food that I love: Deviled crab stuffed, bacon wrapped jumbo shrimp that have been broiled, a good hand made Italian pasta, grilled veggies with chicken and soups. Of course one of my most favorite things to eat is a really good fresh ripe tomato sliced with cucumbers and a little salt and pepper or maybe some rice wine vinegar.

5. Four places I'd rather be right now.
Let's see, Disney World is a given. There is a free feeling there that allows you to enjoy yourself without guilt, without the pressures of life and the most stress you will find is waiting in line or trying to see it all before the day is through.

Alaska is probably my second most rather be (if it was all paid for it would be my first). I hope to someday travel overland to Alaska through Canada, then go on a cruise and guided tour (bus/train) and then spend a week with our relatives with the return trip including the California redwoods (I really want to see those trees; another history thing you know).

My parents are in Knoxville Tennessee with my brother's family enjoying spring in the Smokies. I think that would be great. I have my father's wander lust and I'm pretty sure that if I had lived in the 1800's, I would have ended up trying to be a pioneer (I don't know about Will though). I can imagine myself on a wagon train looking to see what was around the next bend.

Finally I would love to take my family all through the United States checking out all the major battlefields, settlements, forts, landmarks etc. Of course we would have to go to where Will's parents grew up and check out the family history there. I take great pride in our history as a family and as a nation. It's like a really great book just waiting to be read.

6. Four people I am going to tag on this.....let's see. Vicki Myer, Bob Gould, and all of our Australian friends. Have fun!

Tagged again!

1. Four Places you have Lived:

Kansas (but I don't remember it),
Florida, Holland and Wisconsin

2. Four TV. shows I like to watch:

CSI (all of them), Numbers,
Criminal minds and pretty much any car show on speed Vision.

3. Four Places I have been on vacation:

Perhaps it should say "destinations" instead
of "places", because we drive everywhere. For
example we drove to Disney World in Florida from
Wisconsin which means we have been to every state
in between. We actually stopped and spent time in
Tennessee along the way, so perhaps that counts.
We hope and pray to visit Canada this year. As a
kid I fondly remember a trip up the eastern United States
with stops all along the way.

4. Four of my favorite foods:

BACON!!! Lobster, really moist devils food cake with NO frosting or anything, just give me the pan...., Cereal with milk (anything With-Out those fake marshmallows! yuck! its a texture thing.)

5. Four places I'd rather be right now:

See, that is SO Relative; I mean, it would depend on how the expenses were being paid right? I love my home and being home. I can afford home. There are plenty of places I would like to go if all expenses are paid - including my trip home! I miss "people watching" at the beach (-people can be SO entertaining!) Disney World would be my first choice though, if I should ever come into any money. I do enjoy that place!

6. Four people with Blogs that I am going to "Tag" for this:

Claire & Seth! (they count as one)
Nomes!
Rachel Hauck!
Joel Hayes!
And as an added bonus I "tag" Deanna to fill out the form above separately.
C'mon Down! You are the next contestants "Tagged Surveys"!

I think it's still spring?

Warrens was officially listed on the news as getting one of the larger snow totals for this last spring storm that went through. We ended up with about 6 inches on the ground here at the house. Sure made driving and delivering mail interesting. The nice thing about spring storms is that you hardly ever have to shovel because it melts off so fast. For the most part it is gone. Whatever did not melt yesterday I'm sure will melt today.
We start reading meters today. I was really hoping that we would be able to have dry ground to work with but it looks to be a bit mushy from the snow. Mom and Dad have graciously offered to let us read meters some time during the summer so that we can enjoy good ground. We'll see.
My wonderful loving husband came home last night with presents for his tired wife. What a surprise! He brought me home flowers and a crystal vase to put them in. They are beautiful! He also brought me some new cooking utensils because some of mine had met an unfortunate end this last week. It was not a good week for spoons around our house. For the final surprise he gave me a family size griddle. For most women this would not be a good thing. They would have wanted their husband to stop with beautiful flowers. My hubby knows me though and knows that the way to melt my heart is to buy me something to cook with. I saw the griddle box and started thinking of all the things that I could cook with it. What fun! I think I feel a big family breakfast coming on. Hmmmmmm......
Life here at the Donaldson's is pretty good right now. Jacob and his father are working on a project for science class right now. Jake has to build a cardboard boat designed to carry 2 people from one side of a lagoon to the opposite side. His principal has agreed to be the other passenger. They are all full of ideas. I hope that they have fun doing it and I really, really hope it does not sink....so does the principal.
Jessalyn is working on her Heritage Fair project. She has to do something about Wisconsin Heritage. She has worked out her plan. Now this weekend she can put it all together. She was also chosen as one of the select few kids from our school district to be allowed to go to Madison for a special trip to see a Musical and other special field trip type stuff. Evidently it's because of her musical abilities and efforts in the class. I hope she has a good time. She also has a class trip to go to the capitol in early May. We are getting closer to the end of the school year. That means more fun stuff to do according to the kids.
I am trying to get as much done here on the house as possible. I have a general plan and am trying to work it. I don't know how much of it will happen though. I think that this is the same spring plan that I had in the spring of 2004. I seem to be right on schedule for me. Let me tell you things are made so much easier by my "helper" Sam the dog. He is with me every step of the way and still keeps to our agreement of me walking on the bottom of my feet and him walking on the top. If he was not so earnest in trying to help I might get angry, but sometimes it's helpful knowing that at least he wants to help me with some things. When the kids are being kids, Sam is still Sam.
Well, time to go and get the next batch of clothes out of the dryer.
Have a great day!

Happy Easter! He Is Risen!

From left to right:
Jessalyn in the Easter dress that she bought with her
own money;
"Doll" aka Carrie, Dea's Aunt
(Both Doll and Jessalyn are wearing a corsage hand made
by Deanna)
and Jacob, What can I say, He's a boy
and I'm proud that he was so patient with getting his
picture taken...

We took some other pics but I thought they turned out
terrible (I was in them), so this is all you get for now...

Woke up early for the "Sunrise Service". Thankfully
our church is a little more (less) realistic about it;
8:30am. There is no way I would have made it for a
real sunrise. There was a wonderful breakfast at the
church afterwards,
and then another very fine service after that.

It was different for us this year. We weren't going any
where after the service and no one was coming over.
It was just us and Peggy. It was kind of nice actually.
quiet, peaceful and relaxing. Dea served up some
smoked turkey, potatoes, gravy, turnip greens, carrots,
rolls, and we even had some shrimp with cocktail
sauce. (can you imagine what she would have served
if we actually had company coming over???)

As if all that cooking wasn't enough,
Deanna and the kids decorated over 50 eggs
yesterday! Deanna hid them in yard for
them after lunch, while I worked on the computer.
I was surprised at how quickly they found them all

(we counted to make sure. You only have to find
one Easter egg in August to learn to count them all).

After that Deanna and I treated ourselves to a real
luxury! We took a nap! Ahh Sleep! That So Rare
commodity! It was Great!
Afterwards I went back to work on this computer.

I was telling Deanna's Cousin Darin about some of
problems I was having with my computer,
so he GAVE me a better one!
It isn't new, but it really is MUCH better than my
old one!
(by the way, I talked to Seth and Claire at church
today and they asked me to tell you their computer is also
having er...issues. That is why they haven't posted on
their site. They are working on it. They may
have to reformat their hard drive.)
Anyway, I spent most of my day trying to transfer files
and programs. It's slow work and I'm encountering
some problems but with the Lords help I will resurrect
this computer.

And on that note, May EVERY day be the Day,
that Jesus is Resurrected and Glorified in your
Life!
Blessed Easter from
Will, Deanna, Jacob, and Jessalyn!
